I've been an enthusiastic owner of a Cat Genie Automatic Litterbox for about eight months. When we lost our beloved, indoor/outdoor cat, Maggie, to local coyotes, I knew any new cats would have to stay inside. This did not sit well with my sensitive-nosed wife who also doesn't much care for litter box cleaning.

Upon researching the state of Automatic Litterboxes, I was amazed at how extensive the market has become. After a thorough vetting of posters' comments at "Litterbox Central", ( http://www.litterbox-central.com/forum/index.php ) I decided the Cat Genie was so complete and innovative that I even sent them a note expressing my jealousy at not being the inventor.

I placed my name on the, then, three month+ waiting list. When it finally came, I resisted the urge to open it and play as we still hadn't found that "purr"-fect new kitty.

We adopted Abby, a nine-month old from the Humane Society in February and I set up the unit only to find it wouldn’t function.

A call to their extremely helpful customer service quickly identified the problems as a clogged impeller and dirty contacts on the sanitizer cartridge. The unit proceeded to operate flawlessly for two or three months (cleaning itself twice daily) until it clogged again. Having been walked through the relatively simple disassembly before, my call was mostly for feedback and they sent me some free granules for my troubles

It clogged again about two weeks ago and, after a call to customer service, they sent me the new-design impeller that is supposed to minimize clogging at no charge. The rep also sent a free sanitizer cartridge as yet another good faith gesture.

Frankly, even if this thing continues to require a short tear-down every three months, I’m thrilled. (And I suspect the new impeller will help with that.) The rest of the time, it’s a perfect robot that entertains the cat, the dogs, and even humans! See it in action here: http://www.catgenie.com/store/client/

cat box for large cats

Comment: I have tried to find a cat box for my 3 pound female and my 25 pound male. He does not fit the covered boxes, so I made my own. I took an airline type dog crate and put the largest cat pan that I could find towards the back. It has the feel of a litter box...
