Hearworm meds for small dogs

I've found this very informative.
I have a minature pomeranim. He is about 6.5 lbs
He seems to get sick after I give him his heartworm med. He's tried both Sentinal and Interceptor. I've even tried giving him 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 with his dinner. My vet suggested Heartgard, but I'm not so sure he is that familiar with the little dogs.
How safe it this? Is there a particular brand that only small dogs can tolerate?
