Our cat started doing the exact same thing, and at first we thought that he was being picky about the cleanliness of the box. We made sure that it was extra clean everyday, but he continued to poop outside of it. I did a bunch of research to find what other people did just as you are now. One thing I found was that when cats are having bowel problems, they sometimes stop pooping outside of their box. We took our cat to the vet, and sure enough, he had an infection. As soon as he started getting treated, everything went back to normal.
